ALLERGIES AND FOOD SENSITIVITIES

Stress internal.jpg

Allergies and sensitivities to elements in our food and environment are common. With an estimated 20% of Australians suffering from allergic conditions.

When exposed to these elements, our immune system is triggered. Depending on the scale of the reaction symptoms can be mild or severe and can manifest in many different ways, including:

  • skin rashes

  • itchiness

  • swollen, red and/or puffy eyes

  • headaches and migraines

  • respiratory difficulties

  • hay fever

  • sneezing and/or runny nose

  • sinusitis

  • recurring ear infections

  • digestive disturbances

  • fatigue

Sometimes, in particular with allergies, it is can be very obvious what the trigger is. A good example would be those with a nut allergy - eyes or lips may swell, breathing difficulties increase often rapidly after being exposed. However, with milder sensitivities or intolerances, it can be more difficult to identify the culprit/s. Working with a Naturopath can be very helpful in this regard and ease some of the confusion and frustration that often occurs.

When treating allergies of intolerances, I will most often start by identifying, and eliminating where possible, any triggers for a person. Using food diaries and laboratory testing often speeds up this process and can be very useful in this initial step. I have also found the use of botanical medicines and targeted nutritional support extremely beneficial in providing prompt relief.
